In case you've been under a rock today, something really momentous happened. Everyone I love can get married. It's a big deal.
My first friend who is gay, Jose came out to me 21 years ago last month. Ever since that day this issue has been important to me. It's easy to hate, dismiss or belittle an issue that doesn't effect someone you know. Now when Jose came out to me did I say "I'm going to be a champion of gay marriage"? Well no. I wish I had that kind of forethought. What I did think was that Fred Phelps who was corrupting the town I lived in with hatred and idiocy, his kind of thinking would not be tolerated in my world.
You don't have to deeply believe in this cause, but you do have to follow the law of the land....and why wouldn't you? Who do you know that you don't wish the desire for them to be married to the one they love? Who doesn't deserve to have the same rights, protections, and more importantly the love that the rest of the straight world takes for granted.
I post this picture because I got to marry the person of my dreams. He fundamentally changed the course of my life. I would do anything in the world for him. I want to love him, protect him, nurture him and take care of him. If the person of my dreams was a woman, I would hope the people in my life would want the same thing for me.
So this post is for all my LGBTQ friends/family who have brought so much and taught me so much about friendship, humanity, heartache and love. Love is love and love wins.
